Since the launch of Sonuby Weather in October 2023, one feature request has stood out above all others: widgets. I’m happy to announce that iOS widgets are finally coming in the next update!
This was by far the most requested feature, and I’ve spent a lot of time working on it. Developing widgets (not only for iOS) is quite a challenge because they’re small standalone apps written in the platform’s programming language. This means I have to rewrite significant parts of the application in a new language for two systems (iOS and Android).
But the result is worth it: a smooth, native experience which I will be able to reuse in the future for other native experiences such as Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro experiences.
The new widgets are available to anyone running iOS 16 or later. Whether you want a quick look at the current weather or a detailed overview of the coming days, Sonuby’s widgets will make it easier than ever to stay informed - right from your home screen.
At launch, there will be two types of widgets to choose from:
The Current & Upcoming widget shows the current weather and a summary for the next six hours.
This widget is available in three sizes - small, medium and large. It displays a summary for the current day and the next six hours. Depending on the selected report and widget size, you’ll see up to 8 variables at a glance, so you can quickly check the most important weather details.
Also available in three sizes, the Daily Overview widget displays daily summaries for up to 6 days. Depending on your settings, you’ll see up to 5 variables, making it easy to plan ahead for the week.
Each widget is fully customizable. You can choose both the report and the location for each widget you add. This means you can keep an eye on your favorite drop zone, surf spot, or any location that matters to you.
And this is just the beginning. In future updates, you’ll be able to fully configure widgets - choose exactly which variables to display and more.
The iOS widgets are currently about a third of the way through development.
The screenshots you see in the preview at the beginning of the post were taken on a real device and the screencast below shows the Current & Upcoming widget in action.
Thank you all for your patience and continued support.
Widgets have been a huge request and I’m thrilled to finally bring them to Sonuby Weather for iOS. As soon as the iOS widgets are finished, I’ll begin working on Android widgets.
Stay tuned for the release announcement - and get ready to add Sonuby Weather to your iOS home screen!
