I’m thrilled to announce that version 1.6.0 has been released on the App Store and Google Play Store today!
For the first time, I have also recorded a video where I’ll show you the latest changes in this update.
Here is what’s new in this version:
The brand new Live Overview in Sonuby 1.6 is the first step towards the fully customizable, interactive and information-rich vision I have for Sonuby.
Let me explain this in more detail.
When it comes to weather forecast visualizations, you usually have two types of choices: the great-looking forecasts and the highly informative but complicated ones.
The great-looking forecasts, as the name implies, are aesthetically pleasing and make promotional videos like Apple keynotes look very nice. But they usually lack information density.
Highly informative visualizations provide a lot of information, but usually require knowledge to understand. They also tend to be less visually appealing.
The new Live Overview Forecast fills this gap by providing as much information in as little space as possible, while still being easy to understand and aesthetically pleasing.
But that’s just the beginning.
With Live Overview, you can now “zoom in” on any relevant forecast variable using Day and Week Overviews.
Day Overview gives you an at-a-glance view of all the forecast variables for a given day. You can scroll horizontally through the days and also open the Weekly Overview for individual variables if you’re interested in a particular variable.
Week Overview provides a weekly forecast for a single variable, such as temperature. Say you’re looking for the perfect sunny day of the week. Just open the sunshine minutes Week Overview and you’ll be able to quickly see which day is best for your next day outdoors.
When it comes to personal preferences for weather forecasts, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
Say you use Sonuby for your commute but instead of precipitation, wind is more important to you.
With Live Overview’s extensive configuration options, you can now easily customize it to show you exactly the forecasts you want to see.
Want to see all forecast variables without opening Day Overview?
Just change the Additional Forecasts setting to show all forecasts.
Is wind more important than precipitation?
Just move wind up in the forecast configuration.
To help you quickly access all relevant forecasts, the Live Overview also provides shortcuts.
You can access them by tapping a Current Situation tile (the area that displays the current situation of a variable, such as the current temperature).
From the shortcuts menu, you can access related forecasts (such as the altitude forecast), weather maps (like radar) and the settings for a forecast variable.
In previous versions, forecasts were displayed in several different forecast visualizations, which made using Sonuby inconsistent and sometimes difficult to quickly access relevant forecasts.
Due to it’s dynamic and versatile nature, Live Overview is now part of every weather report, replacing the Current Weather Forecast in Daily Life report, Nowcast and Daily Overview in Skydiving and Surfing reports.
Aside from the most prominent new features, there are a number of smaller improvements that I have implemented.
Sonuby 1.6 and Live Overview introduce access to several new forecast variables, including real-time (5-min interval) precipitation and cloud cover forecasts, dew point temperature, sun zenith, sun azimuth and sun elevation.
Live Overview is the first forecast to be fully optimized for tablets. Where previous forecasts were simply upscaled, Live Overview now offers a tablet specific layout which perfectly makes use of the additional space available.
In previous versions, the Enthusiast subscription was required to access tide forecasts. Tide forecasts are now available to all users.
For the rest of the year, I will focus on implementing the following new features:
I will finally bring 14-day forecasts to Sonuby. They will be available in the Live Overview and the new Weekly Forecast.
Eventually it will also be available in the 7-day meteogram.
Making all forecasts fully configurable is the top priority at the moment. Therefore, I will add full customization support to the current 7-Day Forecast and also redesign it to accommodate the new 14-day forecasts and configuration options.
As promised in the last release notes, I will add new weather reports. In the next release, I will add a new snow sports weather report with snow depth and other relevant forecasts.
Even though I haven’t been as active as I wanted to be lately, I’m still posting about the progress I’m making on Sonuby.
